Door County, WI - Kewaunee, Sturgeon Bay to Washington Island and back + a "Football" Stadium

Door County is the peninsula extending into Lake Michigan and Green Bay is located on the western side.  Peninsula is full of summer homes and quaint "shopping" villages.  We were not as impressed driving this area because it was difficult to obtain full views of the lake.  Driving along the Lake Superior shore was much more impressive.  We stayed in the town of Kewaunee, park was nice except for the 24 hour fog horn!



 

The Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help - Sister Adele Joseph Brise
Sister Adele & her family arrived in WI in 1855 from Belgian.  She was given the task to teach (37 yrs.) the young people settling in the area by a voice from heaven.  Along with a few other women she started St. Mary's Boarding Academy.  

Numerous healings were witnessed  though out the years at the Shrine.

How many times do you get stopped so a boat can cross the road??  This boat was only equipped with 3 - 150 hp outboards, probably could get from point A to B quickly!

Tug Ludington - built in Oyster Bay, NY in 1943 and served in WWII.  This tug participated in D-Day towing ammunition barges across the England Channel.  It returned to the states after the war to work in Norfolk, VA and in 1947 was sent to Kewaunee.  It received 26 wartime accommodations. 

Tug has a 4 cycle, 8 cylinder, 16" bore, 20" stroke diesel engine.

Lambeau Field 

Earl L. (Curly) Lambeau founded the Packers in 1919 & was the driving force in the teams early years.  In 1921 he borrowed money to get the team into the now NFL.  He served as the head coach for 31 seasons 212-106-21 record.  The city named the field in his honor.

5 championships in 7 years
Won 1st two Superbowls '67 / '68, never had a losing season.
Died in 1970 @ 57.  Superbowl trophy was named in his honor

December, 1993 LeRoy Butler made a spontaneous leap into the arms of fans upon scoring.  The tradition of the Lambeau Leap continues.  Cheryl is making her attempt!

Wright's Taliesin & Rock House - West of Madison, WI

A day of exploring the local "architects" work! 

Taliesin - home and design studio of architect Frank Lloyd Wright is located 2.5 miles south of Spring Green, WI.  The property was developed on land that originally belonged to Wright's maternal family. The land was settled by Wright's maternal grandfather, Richard Lloyd Jones in 1858 for farming. By the 1870s, Richard's sons had taken over operation of the farm, and they invited Wright to work during summers as a farmhand.   He loved the relaxing and inspiring country side.  Wright's aunts Jennie and Nell began a co-educational school, Hillside Home School, in the family valley in 1887 and let Wright design the building; this was Wright's first independent commission. In 1896, Wright's aunts again commissioned Wright, this time to build a windmill.

Taliesin I was completed in 1911, 2 major remodels were completed after fires.  Such famous Wright’s design were done at this location i.e. Fallingwater, Johnson Wax Headquarters & many others. Mr. Wright had money problems and at least 3 known wives, with many female acquaintances! Wright used this house to test his designs; the student’s would do the labor.  You can see many of the construction imperfections throughout the house.  

Today his architectural school still operates on the property during the fair weather months; they go to Scottsdale in the winter.

The next stop in the same area was the House on the Rock.  

In 1945, Alex Jordan climbed a rock and his imagination never stopped!  Built on top of a 60 ft. rock shows off Alex's imagination and desire to make a show piece.  Rooms are filled with eclectic collections.
